Charging Options for Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

  • McMaster University is becoming a leader in academic research in transportation electrification (with the CERC program). These research efforts would be best matched by complementary initiatives for the support and promotion of the use of these technologies.
  • An immediate solution can be something that would start with only having 110-120v outlets available in some of our parking lots. This could then progress to having level 2 chargers (220-240v) in a certain parking area, available to all employees and visitors. Kind of what the Brock University is offering.
  • It may be worth mentioning that the Ontario government offers an incentive plan for individuals and business when they install electric chargers.
  • Additional charges could be added to monthly parking fees.
  • Offer parking spots by existing 120v wall outlets on the underground stadium lot

  • Additional plug-in areas have been added to parking lots on main campus.

    • Areas of interest would be in Lots I and E, as well as the stadium
    • Looking to incorporate it into the next budget year (2015/16)

  • McMaster University Facility Services has been working to promote transportation electrification by:

    • An electric vehicle charging station currently in place in front of the ABB Facility, however it is restricted to CERC research.
    • More charging stations are currently being considered for the new Wilson (3 charging stations, estimated September 2015) and ExCel (estimated January 2016) facilities.
